We tested voice call features in ten major AI companion apps, grading each on naturalness, emotional range, latency, and contextual awareness.
GoLove AI — the gold standard
GoLove sets the bar. Voice calls feel like phone conversations with a real person. The companion responds in real-time, adjusts tone based on the conversation's emotional direction, and handles interruptions gracefully. Latency is under one second in most cases.
Most impressively, GoLove companions reference past voice calls in future conversations. The voice feature is not separate from the text experience — it is integrated.
Candy AI and Kindroid — solid but limited
Candy AI offers voice messages rather than live calls. Quality is high but the interaction is asynchronous — you speak, wait, and then receive a response. Kindroid provides real-time voice with good quality but less emotional range than GoLove.
Both apps are worth trying for voice, but neither achieves the conversational flow that makes GoLove's implementation feel special.
Apps with basic or absent voice
SpicyChat, CrushOn, and JuicyChat offer limited or no voice features. Their voice implementations, where they exist, are essentially text-to-speech — the companion reads its text response aloud rather than generating a vocal response. The experience is underwhelming compared to dedicated voice implementations.
Replika and Muah AI sit in the middle — functional voice features but inconsistent quality and emotional range.
