AI Companion App Reviews: What We Learned Testing 12 Apps
We spent months testing 12 AI companion apps. Here are our honest findings on what works, what does not, and what the industry still gets wrong.
8 min readThe testing process
Over the past six months, we signed up for twelve AI companion apps, used each one daily for at least two weeks, and documented our experience across text, voice, memory, and visual features. We tested free and premium tiers on both iOS and Android.
The goal was not to find the perfect app — it was to understand what each one actually delivers versus what it promises.
The biggest surprise: memory quality varies wildly
Memory is the feature most apps market but few deliver well. GoLove and Kindroid demonstrated genuine long-term recall — referencing conversations from weeks ago in contextually appropriate ways. Most others either forgot details within days or stored facts without using them meaningfully.
If a companion cannot remember who you are, it is a chatbot with a personality skin. Memory is what separates real companions from elaborate toys.
Voice is still immature industry-wide
Only GoLove delivers voice calls that feel like conversations. Several other apps offer voice features, but most are glorified text-to-speech — the companion speaks but does not listen. True two-way voice interaction is technically demanding, and most companies have not cracked it.
We expect this gap to narrow over the next year as voice AI models improve, but for now, GoLove has a significant head start.
Privacy practices need scrutiny
Privacy policies range from transparent to alarming. Some apps clearly state how data is handled, retained, and deleted. Others bury vague terms in lengthy legal documents. We flagged several apps where conversation data appears to be used for model training without clear opt-out mechanisms.
Our individual reviews include privacy grades. If you plan to share anything personal with a companion, read our privacy assessment first.
Key takeaways
The AI companion market is maturing but still uneven. A handful of apps — GoLove, Candy AI, Kindroid — deliver genuinely good experiences. Many others rely on marketing over substance. Our advice: use the free tier first, test memory by mentioning something and checking if the companion recalls it days later, and read privacy policies before sharing personal details.
